This fun  engagement shoot was shot in two different locations, Waimea Valley and Ke Iki Beach, both on the North Shore of Oahu. Lindsay Schutte, a dancer since childhood, was seeking something new and exciting upon graduating from the University of Iowa. So she enrolled in an Afro-Brazilian martial arts class called Capoeira. The handsome instructor’s assistant, Zach Crittendon, caught her eye immediately. The two struck up a friendship through playful banter, and it didn’t take long for flirtations to develop into something more serious. When Lindsay was offered a work promotion involving a move to Los Angeles, the couple decided to head west together.

Zach insisted on paying for the move, but Lindsay refused, saying she was an independent woman who could provide for herself. “It isn’t like we are married,” she declared. “Well, let’s fix that,” Zach said. “Will you marry me?” At first Lindsay thought Zach was teasing, as he so often did. When she realized he was serious, she happily agreed. A year later they were married at Zach’s parents’ home in Hawaii.  The master Capoeira instructor who had witnessed their first flirtations presided over the sweet ceremony. His Brazilian nickname just happens to be Cupido, meaning cupid.

Keone and Charisse met on their first day of work on the Big Island of Hawaii.  Keone claims it was love at first sight for him, and after “a few weeks of flirting and dates” Charisse began to return his affections.

Keone decided to propose on Thanksgiving day. The entire family gathered in a circle and held hands for the blessing of the meal, each person in turn sharing their personal gratitide.  After fumbling for the right words, Keone finally got down on one knee, asking Charisse to marry him. The family was at once delighted and surprised at the big news!

Kyler and Grace Kwock of Kai-Photo Hawaii captured this fun-loving couple’s spontaneity and love in an intimate engagement session photographed on the island of Oahu.

Photography has always been part of Christie’s life. Christie’s father was an established photojournalist who passed his love for photography on to Christie. With a style that is modern, emotional and spontaneous, she will tell a story behind each image in an unobtrusive way.

What is your most exciting career move or change?

I’ve been a photographer as long as l can remember.  I was working as a landscape photographer in Seattle, and one day I saw an image by Irving Penn.  The subject was a model that he eventually married.  That photograph literally changed my life and shifted my focus to portraits and weddings.  I was inspired.

How would you describe your style?

Simple, clean and beautiful.  My goal is modern, yet timeless and elegant.  I stay away from trendy photography and strive to create images that will look good years from now.  I try to capture the essence of a person behind their everyday face or the face they show the world.  I love to capture something more powerful and meaningful.  As a photographer, it’s my responsibility to record the world accurately, and not just be a good photographer— but a great one.

What one piece of equipment is most important to you?

My 35 mm lens. It’s a great lens for photojournalism and portraits and has little distortion compared to super wide angle lenses and fisheye lenses.

What is something about you that will never change?

My drive to be a great photographer.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

Argentina is so naturally beautiful, and it has a mixture of European, Asian and Native influences.  I would love to capture the diversity in the landscapes and people.

I would be a cinematographer.  I love creating moving images.
