Van + James wedding by derek wong photography

Derek-Wong-Photography-26

Van and James were married at the historic Laniakea in Honolulu. The couple’s love of architecture inspired their event on the elegant grounds, built in the 1920s. Sarah Aoyama of Engaging Moments designed the space, crafting a curtain of ribbon and lace at the ceremony site. Van was a stunning bride in a blush Claire Pettibone sheath gown. Her bridesmaids stood alongside her, wearing dresses in summery shades of yellow. They held hand-tied bouquets of cream peonies, garden roses and orange ranunculuses. Florist Michelle Maeda of Flower Girls created loose arrangements of yellow, pink and cream wildflowers placed in Mason jars atop the tables. Guests savored a delicious haupia wedding cake dressed with a  handcarved art deco cake topper — [...]

Zach + Lindsay Engagement Shoot

Untitled-2ED

Photography by Absolutely Loved This fun  engagement shoot was shot in two different locations, Waimea Valley and Ke Iki Beach, both on the North Shore of Oahu. Lindsay Schutte, a dancer since childhood, was seeking something new and exciting upon graduating from the University of Iowa. So she enrolled in an Afro-Brazilian martial arts class called Capoeira. The handsome instructor’s assistant, Zach Crittendon, caught her eye immediately. The two struck up a friendship through playful banter, and it didn’t take long for flirtations to develop into something more serious. When Lindsay was offered a work promotion involving a move to Los Angeles, the couple decided to head west together. Zach insisted on paying for the move, but Lindsay refused, saying she [...]

Interview with Derek Wong, Oahu Photographer

Derek_Wong_Slide

Will you share a photo that reflects your work?  What is the story behind this photo? I particularly like this image because it has all the components of a great photograph: inspiring light, strong composition and beautiful gesture.  I think this image will look as good 50 years from now as it did when I shot it three years ago. What is your most exciting career move or change? I’ve been a photographer as long as l can remember.  I was working as a landscape photographer in Seattle, and one day I saw an image by Irving Penn.  The subject was a model that he eventually married.  That photograph literally changed my life and shifted my focus to portraits and [...]

Oahu’s Top Wedding Locations

Bayer_2769-Edit3

Built in 1936 on the southeastern coastline, THE BAYER ESTATE is our hands-down winner for the most intimate seaside location on the island of Oahu. The charming French farmhouse has an expansive back lawn scattered with a dozen tall coconut trees and a bamboo arch overlooking the ocean, the perfect natural altar for a wedding. Perhaps the most charming thing about this special place is owner Sooz Mirikitani, a consummate hostess with a passion for entertaining. (808) 377-9359 Photo by L’Amour Photography For a cultural Hawaiian experience, we chose PARADISE COVE as the top site. The famous authentic luau feast is a unique way to celebrate your rehearsal dinner, and the property offers a few private oceanfront locations for a [...]

Maui Wedding

When did you decide you wanted to be a photographer? My father passed away before I turned 4 years old. He left behind hundreds of old photos which he took through his life. Growing up and looking at these images, I felt I was able to see through his eyes and understand who he was as a man. Because of this personal relationship I had with him through these images, I felt a close connection with photography, and the power it had to connect people.

The two pledged their eternal love at the ocean’s edge of the Bayer Estate, as waves danced rhythmically off shore. Their love had come full circle, a delightful series of unexpected twists and turns which culminated in this moment. (Photography by L’Amour Photography)
